Is the character in the screenshots you posted alongside your recent announcement (congrats by the way!) canonically trans? I’m honestly so curious cause I’ve never seen that on screen in a Tokusatsu show before

Yes! She is!

The show she is from is called The High School Heroes and was released last year in Japan. It’s an homage to the very first Super Sentai series, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger.

The character does not reveal herself to be Trans until episode 4 (or maybe 5 it has been a while) while the team leader is searching for their pink member.

Sadly, the character is still closeted to everyone but her best friend and comes out to her teammates in the episode who promise to stand by her and help her when she feels comfortable coming out to her parents.

It’s a very touching scene to be honest.

Congrats on coming out Sabrina! I realized a lot of toku fans I've seen are queer, myself included. Do you think the genre attracts a lot of queer people? If so why do you think that is?

Thank you!

I think a lot of it has to do with the themes of transformation, becoming more powerful through change and embracing the power of being who you are in the face of a world out to get you, or at least powerful enemies who want to see you destroyed and still finding the will, the hope and the motivation to strive to conquer those foes.

I think a lot of us have power fantasies of being able to protect others in the community for hate and bigotry. We wish we could use what makes us ‘different’ to defend those like us, to save them.

One of the messages I love in Super Sentai is that alone we might not be able to stand against the darkness, but together, with all of our colors shining brightly, we can.

I think that’s one of the reasons it resonates so much with LGBTQ+ fans.

Thanks for the question and happy viewing!

May i ask why you chose the name Sabrina? I know for trans people they always have a reason, even if its something like “i found this character with a name like mine hot so im gonna do a power move”

Well, I was going by Bree at first (and I still do to most of my friends) but I wanted to have a longer, more formal name so I asked some friends for ideas about what Bree could be short for. Sabrina was the name that resonated with me the most.

Also, I’m a fan of horror shows and magic-users in fiction, so it worked out right given my personal style has always leaned towards the goth witchy.

My chosen middle name is taken from Poe, Lenore.
